Virtual Friday Forum 13

September has arrived too soon for some and not soon enough for others.  Although the astronomical equinox will not peak this year until September 22, 2020, at 2.30pm BST, meteorologists divide the seasons into three calendar months so, using this method,  autumn started on September 1 and will end on December 1, the start of winter.  Spring will then begin on March 1.  Let us hope we can be back to meetings at Paxton Hall before then.

Virtual Friday Forum 12

Our latest Zoom room produced a good exchange of all things plant related and then some.  Unfortunately, we can’t smell the flowers or see the true colours, but it’s still wonderful to meet up in these strange circumstances.  This day would have been our trip to Southport Flower Show so, considering the gale force winds, we had a lucky escape and we look forward to next year’s visit

Virtual Friday Forum 11

Friday Forum had a small but successful Zoom meeting with participators showing flowers from their gardens.  We agreed that we enjoy remembering where or from whom we acquired a certain plant.  Often it is easier than recalling its actual name!

1. Crocosmia x crocosmifolia 'George Davison'. Spreading nicely.

2. Eurybia macrophylla 'Twilight' (formerly called an Aster.) Starting to gently spread. I grow 1 & 2 side by side.

3.Clematis viticella 'Little Bas'. Has had an amazing comeback after nearly being lost 2 years ago. Bought from Taylors in 2010 or 2011. It looks great this year.

4. Unknown Hemerocallis which I was given about 4 years ago. Clumping up well. Looks good against our terracotta brick.

5. Persecaria amplexicaulis 'Orange Field' bought from Crag House Farm Nursery. I've got it growing below Photinia 'Red Robin' & they complement each other well.

Clockwise from top - Hebe, I wrongly called this common hedgerow plant Red Campion but seems it's a member of the willow herb family, large hip from Rosa Rugosa and salmony pink Pelargonium 

Dorothy sent in these photos:

 Begonia apricot shades. In a hanging basket.  Tip from our Zoomers, Geranium Rozanne can also be used as a long lasting and robust hanging basket.

 Antirrhinum just appeared

Eucomis (pineapple plant) I grew it in a pot for several years and kept dry in the greenhouse over winter. Last year it was planted in the garden.

3 differently coloured linarias, one bluey purple, one cerise and one, the pink one, is a named variety called Canon Went.

The thistle is Galactites tomentosa, a pretty flower with a variegated leaf

The lime green one is Euphorbia stricta - more or less a weed but I like it!

The white flower is, I think, an Ami but I don't know which one, it self-seeded in a pot in the greenhouse
