Virtual Friday Forum 13

September has arrived too soon for some and not soon enough for others.  Although the astronomical equinox will not peak this year until September 22, 2020, at 2.30pm BST, meteorologists divide the seasons into three calendar months so, using this method,  autumn started on September 1 and will end on December 1, the start of winter.  Spring will then begin on March 1.  Let us hope we can be back to meetings at Paxton Hall before then.

Judith showed us the dark red foliage of her Bergenia ciliata 'Dumbo' and Heuchera  'Red Lightning' https://www.heucheraholics.co.uk/Heuchera_Red_Lightening/p3666016_15638397.aspx
Carol:

Herbaceous Clematis
Sinacalia Tangutica
Persicaria Amplexicaulis Alba
Persicaria Amplexicaulis Rosa
Prostanthera (Mint Bush)

Other members brought Asters, Heleniums and other  flowers which extend the season and we discussed the Berberis sawfly, for which we would appreciate to find a  solution.

Next Virtual Meeting will be on October 2nd

Virtual Friday Forum 12

Our latest Zoom room produced a good exchange of all things plant related and then some.  Unfortunately, we can’t smell the flowers or see the true colours, but it’s still wonderful to meet up in these strange circumstances.  This day would have been our trip to Southport Flower Show so, considering the gale force winds, we had a lucky escape and we look forward to next year’s visit
Dorothy’s 5 (could be subtitled Gardening on a budget!):
Gladioli. Won the corms in a raffle!

Delphinium 2nd set of flowers this year.        Naughty Marietta french marigold
Grown from a cutting

Brown Turkey fig grown outside first time in over 30 years.  It has kept immature fruit on over the winter

:
Peter’s plant sale raised an amazing £710 for Wheatfields Hospice.  Very well done to Peter and thanks to all who contributed.

It’s always a pleasure to click on to HardyPlant’s site which features some of our members’ gardens too.

Next virtual meeting:  Friday 4th September at 1.30 pm and zoom meetings will probably continue on the first Friday of each month using the same details.

Virtual Friday Forum 11

Friday Forum had a small but successful Zoom meeting with participators showing flowers from their gardens.  We agreed that we enjoy remembering where or from whom we acquired a certain plant.  Often it is easier than recalling its actual name!
Maggie:

Flowers top right then clockwise
Erygium alpinum  possibly ‘Blue Star’ or ‘Blue Sea‘
Geranium Rozanne
Aster novi-belgii ‘Lady in Blue’.
Clematis Integrifolia possibly ‘Juuli’  tied in up a wooden post - meter plus in height
Herbaceous clematis ‘Cassandra’ self supporting - meter plus in height
Janella:

1. Crocosmia x crocosmifolia 'George Davison'. Spreading nicely.
2. Eurybia macrophylla 'Twilight' (formerly called an Aster.) Starting to gently spread. I grow 1 & 2 side by side.
3.Clematis viticella 'Little Bas'. Has had an amazing comeback after nearly being lost 2 years ago. Bought from Taylors in 2010 or 2011. It looks great this year.
4. Unknown Hemerocallis which I was given about 4 years ago. Clumping up well. Looks good against our terracotta brick.
5. Persecaria amplexicaulis 'Orange Field' bought from Crag House Farm Nursery. I've got it growing below Photinia 'Red Robin' & they complement each other well.
Linda, from small garden at coast:
Clockwise from top - Hebe, I wrongly called this common hedgerow plant Red Campion but seems it's a member of the willow herb family, large hip from Rosa Rugosa and salmony pink Pelargonium

Dorothy sent in these photos:
Begonia apricot shades. In a hanging basket.  Tip from our Zoomers, Geranium Rozanne can also be used as a long lasting and robust hanging basket.
 Antirrhinum just appeared

Eucomis (pineapple plant) I grew it in a pot for several years and kept dry in the greenhouse over winter. Last year it was planted in the garden.

Next virtual meeting:  August 21st at 1.30 pm.

Janella:
Salvia microphylla 'Neon'
Achillea millefolium 'Pink Grapefruit'

3 differently coloured linarias, one bluey purple, one cerise and one, the pink one, is a named variety called Canon Went.
The thistle is Galactites tomentosa, a pretty flower with a variegated leaf
The lime green one is Euphorbia stricta - more or less a weed but I like it!
The white flower is, I think, an Ami but I don't know which one, it self-seeded in a pot in the greenhouse
