Visit to Alwoodley Gardens

Friday Forum members had a lovely time admiring the gardens, the sun shone on us for our visit and there was a good turnout.

 

The garden of our member Suzanne included a variety of shade and sun loving plants as well as an auricula theatre! Vistors asked about the Gladioli which is Gladio Byzantus and the Astrantia with is Astrantia Roma.

Kate and David, Suzanne’s neighbours, also very kindly offered to open their garden for us which included a beautiful peony, 'Jan van Leeuwen’ and a magnificent tree fern!

Suzanne and Kate provided us with delicious cakes and biscuits, and members’ donations of £160.60 were sent to Lineham Farm Charity, which helps disadvantaged children.

 Presentation: Roger Burnett – Pelargoniums

Roger, who started out gardening for Scarborough Council, a multi award winner at shows and now busily retired, entertained us and taught us all about Pelargoniums. From his grandmother teaching him to take cuttings he became addicted to growing the plants and has many greenhouses where he grows thousands of them from seeds and cuttings. Roger was accompanied by his artist wife, Yvonne, who makes beautiful cards and also helps with the installation of show stands.

We learnt about the interesting history of the plant, the many categories, how to take cuttings and how to care for Pelargoniums.

We were able to purchase plants and cards after the talk.

Growing plants in containers – David Allison

Experienced gardener David Allison, who has just been judging in the Great Pavilion at this year’s Chelsea Flower Show gave us an informative and interesting illustrated presentation about growing fruit, vegetables, flowers and herbs in containers. We were given lots of tips and examples of what to grow and answered our questions.

David brought a variety of plants for us to purchase including herbs, fuchsias and salvias which were quickly snapped up by our members

He also brought along a range of books on various topics which he offered at a discounted price

We were delighted to celebrate long-standing Friday Forum member Ann’s birthday with a special afternoon tea and a garden-themed cake made by Liz. Ann, who is turning 90, loves life and we all love her. Ann is a regular contributor to the display table and whenever we can’t remember to name of a plant, Ann can always supply it.

Friday Forum’s First Flower Festival

 Members were tasked with creating an installation to include two natural materials depicting a book or song title and some stretched it to a film!

We had 23 entries and members had fun guessing the answers. Christine scored the highest.

Ann also brought a couple of books by Enid Blyton which she has had since a child: Let’s Garden and Book of the Year which gives notes on nature for every day of the year including stories, poems and songs. An example of a Motto from Week #44:

 It is better to be a little patient when crossing the road, than to be a little patient in the hospital.

Although there have been reprints, these copies are worth quite a bit, but Ann wouldn’t part with them.

Norma has caught loads of small slugs using the beer in a container method which are then left out for the birds.

Norma also brought a jug of blossom: Camellia,  Exochorda x macrantha 'The Bride' , Snowball, Choisya Aztec Pearl, Canary Bird and a perfumed Azalea

We didn’t know what to expect from the delightful and dapper Peter Mathers’ talk entitled Poetry, Prose and Peonies. It turned out to be a hugely entertaining and informative tour of the gardens of famous people with literary connections. Peter talked us through the history of the gardens accompanied by great photographs and personal anecdotes ranging from William Wordsworth’s garden in the Lake District to Winston Churchill’s garden at Chartwell. There were plenty of ideas to adopt for our own gardens as well as places for our to-visit lists.
