Friday Forum Spring Show 2019

Judged by John Freer and Graham Wheatley and administrated by Dorothy Ambridge, the Friday Forum Spring Show attracted 57 exhibits by 18 exhibitors and was enjoyed by all. 

John explained his marking criteria which includes “the judge is always right” and gave a talk about daffodils and his other hobby, knitting.  He also gave us some useful gardening tips such as covering a watering can with a  pair of tights to stop debris from entering.

Carol’s garden must be looking spectacular this season.  She brought: salvia Rosmarinus, Clematis Armandii, Magnolia stellata, Prunus,

Rhododendrons (Shamrock, Snipe and Blue Silver) Amelanchier, Mahonia Prunus Snow Showers, Photinia Red Robin

Gardening Matters

My name is Anna & I work on Alan Titchmarsh's garden makeover show, ‘Love Your Garden’.

We redesign and makeover the gardens of families across the country.

This year we are trying something new and want to inspire the UK to do more DIY gardening projects at home.

We are looking to follow DIY/novice gardeners/residents and any upcoming domestic garden projects they want to do at home themselves/or on an allotment.

We are hoping to follow them over a 6-8 period.

Below are some potential new builds we would ideally like to follow, although we are open to new ideas!
• Wildlife pond
• Flower meadow from seed
• Unusual raised bed project eg out of furniture?
• Vertical gardens perhaps in a limited space, on a roof terrace perhaps?
• To find a novice gardener who is willing to let us set up a new build in their space and willing to take care of it for 6-8 weeks and do a video diary for us
• A naturalistic kid’s den or play area
• Make their shed look prettier with edible vines

I wondered if you could kindly help with my search by forwarding this on to any of your gardening contacts in the UK? Via any facebook group you have/newsletter/email list?

If anyone Is interested in this project, my contact details are below.

Ideally it would be great if they emailed me photos of their garden, and a description of the project they are doing/want to start.

Paxton AGM will be held on Tuesday 23^rd April at 8 pm and Jenny encouraged members of Friday Forum to attend.  There is a vacancy for Chair if anyone is interested.

The recent Plant Sale was a financial success and Dorothy was thanked for her input.

Get fit, get an allotment and unearth a crop of benefits

 

Presentation:  Creating an Allotment show Garden and what the President gets up to by Phil Commersall BEM

 

The enthusiastic president of the Allotment Society gave an interesting talk about how his mission is to promote allotments in Yorkshire and beyond by whatever means.  He has been known to bribe the BBC with strawberries and stage amazing displays at a wide range of venues to publicise his cause.  We saw illustrations of exhibits which were a far cry from regimented rows of vegetables in a bed.  Indeed, Phil, often seen sporting flamboyant horticultural-themed clothes and bowler hat, and his team won Silver at Chelsea in 2014, in 2015 his VE Day anniversary allotment wowed the public at the Harrogate Show followed by a Gold in 2016

Phil has been awarded the British Empire Medal for services to Horticulture in Yorkshire, has set up Learning Days for allotment growers  and is active in Rawdon in Bloom.

 Ann’s had this Veltheimia capensis since 1983.  The bulbs need repotting now to improve flowering

 

 In an experiment to produce more stems, Judith pinched out the main stem of her Aeonium resulting in 5 new heads

 This solitary trumpetless daffodil was found by Celia in a supermarket bouquet.  Can anyone put a name to it?

Kate’s bargain buy from The Arium for £1 a pot.  These Cyclamen hederifolium have beautiful leaves

 Currently flowering in Gill’s garden are Pulmonaria Blue Ensign and a white one, Allium paradoxum normale, fritillaria, Epimedium, Anemone blanda

She also needs plants for the sale held that day after judging takes place when it is open to the public.

The Friday Forum Day Trip on 16^th August has now been finalised and it looks an interesting itinerary.  We thank Janella for organising it and she can give you full details of this event.
